Virtual tour to highlight and explore Walker Valley

Apr 21, 2023 | 4:06 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — Tomorrow is Earth Day, and Conservation North is putting on a multimedia tour of the Walker Valley highlighting the importance of maintaining the forest ecosystem.

2023 is the 53rd year that Earth Day has been observed. The official theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in our planet”, with the common idea that if we all take action now, we are making a sound investment for the future. Conservation North is holding a multimedia tour tomorrow taking people through the Walker Valley.

One of the reasons for this multimedia tour is to help protect forests and watersheds from logging. The Walker Valley is located south of Kakwa Provincial Park, which is east of Prince George and straddles the B.C.-Alberta border. Michelle explains why the walker valley is unique.

“So the Walker is special because it is among only three intact watersheds in the Upper Fraser area. And like you said, we’ve seen a lot of logging everywhere else and this area has remained free of that. So that’s why it’s special and that’s why we’re doing a slide show about it tomorrow night.” – Michelle Connolly, Director, Conservation North

Areas unaffected and untouched by humans, allow for habitats to thrive, and a loss of biodiversity is a real threat. Michelle says that action to protect old growth forests as well as other ecosystems needs to happen now.

If you wish to attend the event tomorrow, it is taking place at the Artspace, which is located at 222-1635 3rd Avenue, at 7:00 pm, and it is free admission.
