PRINCE GEORGE — As summer starts to set in, we will be getting more hours of sunlight, and as we spend more time in the sun, it is important to keep our eyes protected. We learn more about how to keep your eyes protected from the sun in this week’s to your health.

As we start to spend more time outside with the beautiful weather that spring and summer brings, that means our eyes will be exposed to sunlight for longer periods of time, which means that protecting them becomes important, particularly if we are spending hours outside.

“So even on an overcast day, we’re getting bombarded with ultraviolet radiation. So we think of UV right as that harmful rays that can cause, you know, damage to the surface of the eye, the surface of the skin around the eye as well as can even penetrate into the eye and the back of the eye in some cases.” – Vincent Budac, Optometrist & Owner, True North Optometry

As many of us already know, the most common and easiest way to protect our eyes from the sun are by wearing a pair of sunglasses.

“When it comes to sunglasses, there’s different quality to sunglasses. So a lot of people think, well, hey, it’s marketed to sunglasses. It’s as good as anything else. It’s not the case, especially with kids sunglasses. We want to make sure that it’s a really good quality product. They can be different. Quality lenses have definitely coatings on them. And so if they’re scratched, if they’re warm, they don’t protect us as well as a good quality, you know, sunglasses, prescription sunglasses.” – Vincent Budac, Optometrist & Owner, True North Optometry
