Third canoeing camp coming

NORTHERN BC – It is one of the favourite local past times come summer in Prince George and region, with no shortage of lakes and rivers. Canoeing. And that’s why Jordan Cranmer is embarking on her third year of the Youth Canoe Camp.

“So we’re looking for 32 youth over the course of two days aged 13 to 25. So we want youth who might have an interest in the watershed, want to learn more, want to connect with each other, build relationships and their networks and community. We’re just looking for anybody, really.”

One of the largest watersheds in BC is the Nechako Watershed at 47,000 square kilometres, which is over one and a half times the area of Vancouver Island.

“There are 15 First Nations that live in the watershed that call it home.,” explains Kim Menounos, Northern Regional Manager with the Fraser Basin Council. “And then there are five municipalities and two regional districts. So it’s an enormous area. It’s covered in multiple jurisdictions. So it’s a collaboration within the watershed is a really key component to looking at keeping the watershed healthy and working together.”

And the Fraser Basin Council appreciates any kind of attention to the importance of that watershed. Especially the younger generation.

“It really is. And I think we, you know, we we know that engaging youth is key to achieving sustainability, to planning for sustainability in our future.” Cranmer describes the event as a fun, experiential learning opportunity for youth to connect and collaborate with each other, community members, Elders and members of local First Nations, as well as researchers for a full day of paddling and activities.

“Anecdotally, we hear that they love the food, they love being on the water, the sunshine, they love the opportunity to learn how to paddle and to recreate outdoors and to see a section of the river that they might not have gotten on before and they go out.”

And organizers are hoping to hear from folks rather than later.

“So we’d like you to register before August 1st from our website. So if you go to the Watershed Roundtable website, you can register there or you can find us on Facebook or Instagram.”
