Lightning-caused wildfire ignites 24km south of Fort St. James a potential threat to Highway 27 corridor

FORT ST. JAMES — BC Wildfire Service crews are busy responding to a new fire located 24 kilometres south of Fort St. James.

The 30-hectare lightning-caused Tsah Creek wildfire was detected Wednesday afternoon and is currently classified as out-of-control.

“This fire is burning in grass, brush and open to heavy timber. Multiple initial attack crews, a heavy equipment strike team, 2 helicopters and airtankers are currently responding. The fire is highly visible to surrounding communities and commuters on Highway 27,” said the Wildfire Service in a tweet.

The Tsah Creek fire is one of 100 active fires currently burning in B.C., including 11 new fire starts in the past 24 hours.

Of the 100 active fires, the BC Wildfire Service says 76 were caused by lightning, 20 were human-caused and the cause of four is currently unknown.
