PRINCE GEORGE – They’re everywhere. Phone are inevitable for kids to get their hands on, it’s just a matter if it’s happening in a safe way. It’s hard to know what’s fully going on on your child’s phone, but it’s important to try and stay in the loop.

Creating good habits and an environment with open communications is a good start when it comes to having these conversations.

“As parents, we do struggle a little bit with understanding what the hip new things are on social media. So it’s great to take advice from the RCMP who have people that are examining this at an expert level. It’s important to have these conversations on an ongoing basis and to establish a good, healthy habits at home. So, putting phones away, making sure you know what your what your children are using online, because we can’t stop them. It has to be realistic, but it is just an ongoing conversation like so many other things.”

– Laura Weller, Chair of the District Parent Advisory Committee for SD57

The beginning of the school year has definitely brought back the topic of safety when it comes to using social media and other apps on kids devices.

“With the start of the school year, as always, we get many complaints from students in our schools about things happening on social media that definitely warrants some police interaction. Sometimes it’s cyberbullying, but often it’s sexting and sextortion, which are something that is really hard to recover from as a teenager.”
