foothills extension?

Could an extension of Foothills Blvd be in PG’s future?

PRINCE GEORGE — Foothills Boulevard is one of the city’s longest roads and a crucial arterial. It begins all the way at Chief Lake Road and concludes at 18th avenue at the new roundabout. The city’s future years capital plan has highlighted an idea of a potential extension of Foothills from 18th Avenue to Ferry Avenue. However, the City says that it is by no means a sure thing.

“I haven’t seen us go back to the unfunded unlikely list and say, ‘Hey, let’s go after that.’ What I will say is the last time a council seriously considered working on Foothills was when we had funding for a transit station to go along Foothills.” – Councillor Garth Frizzell

If this extension were to take place, it would have to go through valuable green space in like Ginter’s Meadow.

“The proposed road is intended to increase access to certain parts of the city. But at the same time, there is a tradeoff with that, which could mean the loss of, you know, important and really well used and valued green space.” – Dr. Rylan Graham, Associate Professor of Environmental Planning, UNBC

Dr. Rylan Graham says that more municipalities are placing importance on protecting green spaces like Ginter’s.

“A lot of what communities are doing these days is placing priority on protecting natural spaces and so and high quality public spaces. I think that that is a commonality in a lot of communities. And also at the same time, a lot of welcoming community input in terms of helping to shape the direction of the city, but also how spaces are developed or protected.” – Dr. Rylan Graham, Associate Professor of Environmental Planning, UNBC

Councillor Frizzell says that the ideas put forward for the future years capital plan and what is actually decided at council are two very different things and that “if you want a gauge of what the ideas are, go to the unfunded unlikely list. If you want a gauge of what council actually does, look to that decision.”
