PRINCE GEORGE — BC United MLA for Peace River South Mike Bernier spoke to CKPG News Thursday (Aug.29) outlining what his next steps will be following Wednesday’s announcement that BC United would be suspending its election campaign.

On August 28, reports came in that Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier called an emergency meeting of the party caucus to discuss the future of the official opposition. Bernier said that he had been unable to reach Falcon at the time.

“I didn’t see it coming. We’ve been working really hard, trying to get good policy ideas out there for people as a united team. Then Kevin [Falcon] announced that he was suspending our campaign and joining forces with the Conservative Party. It was a bit of a surprise and shock … A lot of people felt pretty abandoned yesterday.” – Mike Bernier, MLA for Peace River South

As for his next steps, Bernier says that he hasn’t made a decision yet and wants to talk to all the people around him and figure out what’s best going forward. He did mention that if “I want to continue on … I could still run as an independent and run basically with no party name and say ‘I’m going to do the best I can for the people in the region.'”

Mike Bernier was first elected in 2013 as a BC Liberal under former Premier Christy Clark and held the post of Minister of Education in cabinet. Bernier spoke about the parallels and he and much of the BC United caucus are facing.
