PRINCE GEORGE – The recent announcement of a federal minister focused on artificial intelligence and digital innovation marks a significant step forward for AI researchers and Canadian companies looking to implement AI strategies. CKPG News recently connected with an AI expert from UNBC, who shared that this appointment is excellent news for the technology sector.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has become one of the first world leaders to establish a cabinet position dedicated to artificial intelligence. According to Dr. Ben Daniel, an AI expert at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), this development represents a significant step forward for Canadians.

In his first speech as Canada’s inaugural Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon outlined four priorities for his ministry.

AI Four Priorities

1. Growing the AI industry in Canada

2. Helping more businesses start using AI

3. Making sure Canadians trust AI

4. Ensuring Canada has control over how AI is used in the country

According to Dr. Daniel, there is still much to learn as the technology continues to evolve.

” We need to know where, Canada is at in terms of AI development, in terms of, AI uptake, in terms of some of those issues that come up about, AI being used in a negative way, by, algorithms, getting the output wrong, using that wrong information to make, critical decisions, disadvantaging, certain groups.”

Dr. Daniels emphasizes that for Canadians to enhance their use of and understanding of AI, they will need improved access to and knowledge of the technology.
