UBCO Heat beat UNBC Timberwolves for first win of Canada West men’s soccer season

KELOWNA — Jaise Shaw scored twice to lead the UBC Okanagan Heat to a 3-2 win over the UNBC Timberwolves in Canada West men’s soccer action Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon in Okanagan.

The result gave the 1-8-2 Heat their first win of the season, while the TWolves dropped to 3-7-2.

Jamie Wildash-Chan and Hagon Kim scored first half goals for UNBC, as the two teams were tied 2-2 at the half. Wildash-Chan opened the scoring inside two minutes. Shaw then levelled the score in the 31st minute, before Malachi Emerson put the home team ahead with a penalty kick.

Kim then levelled the score again as he headed in a corer kick from Wyatt Lyon. That was Lyon’s sixth assist of the season, meaning he’s matched Kensho Ando’s single-season program record.

But the Heat were not to be denied as Shaw scored his second in the 63rd minute to to hand his team all three points.

The loss keeps UNBC in fifth place in the Pacific Division, just outside the playoff picture. They’ll look to bounce back as they’ll play the Heat in a Sunday afternoon matinee at Nonis Sports Field.

Kick off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Elsewhere, the UNBC women are preparing to host the Trinity Western Spartans at Masich Place Stadium in a noon kickoff today. The Spartans won the first meeting of the weekend on Friday night.
