PRINCE GEORGE – The Downtown Prince George strategy is a partnership between the City and Downtown Prince George and aims to revitalize the downtown through programming, marketing, communications and placemaking. It was proposed to encourage revitalization right away to start attracting more people downtown, but was met with some hesitation from some councillors. The councillors agreed that revitalization is needed, but some felt that the larger issue of making downtown safer was the more pressing issue.

“I think we are we’re at an interesting time right now where we’re trying to balance, you know, the the increase in crime and probably unease people feel about being in the downtown core. But at the same point, we know that the more people who can get downtown, the the better impact is going to have, on reducing crime within that area as well.” said City Councillor Tim Bennett.

The strategy recommends four key aspects be implemented for revitalization which are: developing a unique positioning, identifying future trends, establishing growth opportunities and lastly, recommending actions to support short and long term needs.

“In order to enliven the downtown and make it not only safer but also feel safer, we do need to have more activities downtown. I think that will make a difference. It may not be right away, but for our businesses downtown that have been suffering so much, I think that we need to do more than just the policing aspect. ” said City Councillor Trudy Klassen.

A Nightlife Economy Action Plan and supporting downtown occupancy are recommendations within the Downtown Prince George Strategy.
