RCMP launches zero-tolerance strategy for downtown fire-related crimes

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George RCMP is taking a zero-tolerance approach to fire-related incidents in the downtown core. It’s part of a new plan that includes the creation of a dedicated team assigned to address street disorder in the downtown core. It comes on the heels of a big meeting in Prince George last week that included members of the RCMP, the city and the provincial government.

Last week, City officials and Council members met with provincial law enforcement to discuss public safety and staffing challenges. Prince George RCMP Superintendent Darin Rappel announced new interim procedures to enhance law enforcement and community engagement in downtown.

“ It’s not a permanent measure, based on my discussion with the superintendent. And then we’ll monitor it based on the stats.”

Mayor Simon Yu

City of Prince George

A dedicated team of eight RCMP members have been assigned to the downtown, responding to incidents such as shoplifting, arson, and drug-related offences. Two members will be on duty for every shift, seven days a week, with additional support provided through overtime.

While the City and Business owners welcome these enhanced enforcement measures, officials emphasize that municipal government does not direct RCMP operations. Instead, they continue to advocate at the provincial and federal levels for broader, long-term solutions.

“ We know that’s a Band-Aid solution. Will take it because we’re desperate. But, you know, until there’s, a real demonstration of a vision and, and a thoughtful, overarching plan.”

Eoin Foley

President, Downtown Prince George

Mayor Simon Yu and the council will continue to monitor monthly crime stats and determine whether this program is affecting public safety in downtown.

The City and members of downtown Prince George are inviting Premier David Eby to visit Prince George to continue the discussions and share residents’ perspectives directly with provincial leaders..
