Downtown patrol team targets street disorder in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – Since the beginning of the month, a dedicated team of eight downtown RCMP officers and Bylaw officers have been assembled to address street disorder in the downtown core. It comes hot on the heels of a meeting involving the province, city officials and police to address crime in the city.

Almost every day, the Prince George RCMP and Bylaw Services come together before heading out on patrol in the downtown area. This daily collaboration is a testament to their shared commitment to making our community safer.

“ The Prince George RCMP has taken steps to modify the downtown safety unit and their schedule in the downtown core. We are currently out 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

During their shift, officers are encouraged to explore different ways of patrolling.

During a typical downtown patrol, officers are focused on identifying and addressing any law infractions.

“ So a bylaw call is going to deal with obviously just your municipal bylaws that are on the books here at the city. So that’s to do with like, unsightly issues. Issues with animals. It could be a nuisance problem, a nuisance abatement issue. “

Kent MacNeill

Manager Bylaw Services, City of Prince George

As part of this operational change, the team has a zero tolerance for fire-related incidents.

“ Depending on the scope of the fire, certainly, if it’s deliberate, it could be arson if it’s a means of keeping warm and doing damage to maybe a sidewalk. It’s mischief; there are varying levels, but either way, it’s not allowed. And we are submitting reports to the Crown Council.”

The City is actively collaborating with provincial and federal partners to seek more comprehensive solutions. This includes pushing for bail reform, implementing stronger criminal justice measures, expanding mental health services, and providing supportive housing options.
