Big Brother? More like a helpful neighbour, says PG RCMP

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George RCMP is promoting its “See Something, Say Something” campaign to shed light on the city’s CCTV registry and clarify any misconceptions surrounding it.

Established in 2022 through a collaboration with the City of Prince George, the registry allows residents and businesses to voluntarily and confidentially register the locations of their security cameras.

This initiative helps police save valuable time during investigations by pinpointing where footage may have captured crucial evidence, rather than sending officers door-to-door to request recordings.

Registering is seen as a proactive step to bolster community safety by helping investigators quickly identify potential video sources during incidents.

Additionally, the RCMP is working to dispel myths regarding the program by clarifying what authorities can and cannot do.

They emphasize that registering does not permit law enforcement to surveil residents or automatically access video footage. Instead, police must directly contact camera owners if they suspect relevant evidence is available.

The personal information shared during registration is kept confidential by the City of Prince George and is only shared with law enforcement during active investigations.

Safeguards are in place to prevent unauthorized access or misuse of this data. Residents are encouraged to sign up on the City’s website to aid in quicker and more effective investigations.
