Miracle On Third: Young Parent Program Supports Teen Moms

Dec 4, 2018 | 11:54 AM

PRINCE GEORGE- Miracle on Third is happening this Thursday. It’s a chance for the community to come together and raise money for the Elizabeth Fry Society. The society hosts a number of programs that help families and women in need including the Young Parent Program. It gives teen moms a chance to finish grade 12 in a supportive environment. The program is accessible for women under 24 who had their first child before they turned 20. There is a classroom on site and just steps away is a free childcare space, it’s a partnership between the society and School District 57.  “We have incredibly qualified staff at the agency so it not only helps them further their education goals but it also supports them as new moms,” said Family Programs Manager, Shannon Smith, “we can support breastfeeding and we can support those in the moment conversations around their child’s development.” Last year the program saw ten girls graduate and because they are able to access childcare until they are 24 it allows them to pursue post-secondary if they wish.

To help the Elizabeth Fry Society support families in our community, visit the drive-thru in the parking lot beside the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group building on Third Avenue between 7 am and 6 pm this Thursday. Cash donations are welcome but items are also needed including blankets and bedding, diapers and wipes, personal hygiene products, winter clothing, books and toys, Gift Cards, and food. All of the donations will stay in our community to support women and their children.
