Cops for Cancer gets underway

PRINCE GEORGE – Students at Quinson Elementary had some special guests pop by today (May 15).

More than a dozen riders with Cops for Cancer Tour de North. The annual event has police agencies and emergency service personnel cycle for seven days across northern British Columbia, raising money for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society.

“The money will go towards Camp Goodtimes,” explains Janine Mendes, Coordinator for the Tour de North. “Camp. Good times as a summer camp in Vancouver. And it’s for families and children who are affected by cancer. It’s a camp where children just get to be kids and not have to worry about all the the medical, problems that they’re going through.”

This is the 25th annual ride with seven of the riders returning. The goal is to raise $175,000. It started off small but has grown not only in scope but in ridership.

“It’s definitely starting to build some momentum that we’re really thrilled to see,” says Corporal Jennifer Cooper with the Prince George RCMP. “This is our 25th year here in the North. So it started off very small, kind of like an Indie tour with not a lot of support and just a core group of people who are really dedicated to making this happen.”

This year, there are seven alumni riders returning to make the 800-kilometre, North-South ride.

“There are a lot of ways to participate here in Prince George,” says Cpl. Cooper. “For example, we have a golf tournament happening on July 25 to benefit Cops for Cancer Tour de North. So, if you are a golfer or want to be a golfer or just want to come out and have fun, there are links on our website on how to sign up for that or on our socials as well.”
