PRINCE GEORGE – Residents looking for ways to stay active and entertained this summer won’t have to look far.

The City of Prince George has unveiled a busy lineup of family-friendly events running throughout the coming months, featuring live music, food trucks, outdoor movies, FIFA World Cup celebrations and activities designed to get children exploring local parks.

City officials say the goal is to create opportunities for residents of all ages to gather, connect and enjoy the community’s public spaces throughout the summer.

One of the signature events returning this year is Foodie Fridays at Canada Games Plaza. The popular lunchtime and evening gatherings will feature a rotating lineup of local food trucks, vendors at the Nanguz’An container market, free year-round skating, games and live entertainment.

Foodie Fridays are scheduled for July 10, 24 and 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 17 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and August 7 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The July 17 edition will have a special soccer theme tied to the FIFA World Cup, featuring live performances from Hey Day, Good Juju and the Chris Goodwin Band.

Elsewhere, music fans can head to Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park for another season of Music in the Park.

Parks and Recreation Community Coordinator Dorion Van Caeseele said the series is divided between smaller pavilion performances and larger bandshell concerts.

“We got Music in the Park. It’s split between pavilion and concerts. We have four pavilion nights, two concert nights,” said Van Caeseele. “The pavilion ones are a little bit smaller, low-key here at the pavilion, and the concerts are a little bit bigger, bringing in some acts from out of town.”

Pavilion performances are scheduled for July 9, July 30, August 6 and August 20 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The July 9 event will feature the Khast’an Drummers, Trina Chivilo and Fraser Lyric Opera.

Larger concert nights will take place July 23 and September 3. The July concert will feature Corbin Spensley, Dana Sipos and Bu Von Blume.

According to Van Caeseele, the pavilion events offer a more intimate atmosphere, while the bandshell concerts will include food trucks and a larger festival-style experience.

Soccer fans will also have one more opportunity to celebrate the FIFA World Cup this summer.

The City’s final Watch Party in the Plaza event is scheduled for July 19 at Canada Games Plaza. Running from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., the event will include a public viewing of the World Cup final, local food trucks and access to the Nanguz’An container market. After the championship match, attendees can enjoy cultural performances provided by the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society before the evening concludes with the City’s first-ever drone show around 10 p.m.

Families with children are also encouraged to participate in the annual Kids in PG Parks Passport program. The initiative challenges children to visit parks across the city and answer questions about each location. The first 50 participants who complete and return their passport will receive a free child admission to the Canfor Leisure Pool. All completed passports will also be entered into prize draws featuring donations from local organizations and businesses.

“You can pick up the passports at City Hall, the pool, Exploration Place and the library,” Van Caeseele said. “Youth go around to all the parks listed in there, answer the questions and then submit it for a chance to win some prizes.”

The deadline to submit completed passports is July 31.

Rounding out the summer schedule is the return of Movie in the Park, which will take place on September 11. This year’s event will move to a new location that has yet to be announced. The outdoor screening will begin around dusk and is free to attend.

Parks and Recreation Coordinator Michelle Lequereux said organizers are still finalizing the details but hinted at the type of movie residents can expect.

“We’re going to be having our Movie in the Park again. We’re going to be having a new location,” said Lequereux. “The movie is going to happen September 11th and usually they start right around dusk. What I can say is we are expecting Disney or Pixar this year.”

Residents can find complete event schedules and additional community activities by visiting the City of Prince George’s online events calendar. With everything from concerts and cultural celebrations to outdoor movies and children’s activities, city officials are hoping residents take advantage of the many opportunities to get outside and enjoy the summer season.
