Schinkel enters crowded race for RDFFG Area D seat

Schinkel spent 30 years with the fire department and says his experience responding to emergencies throughout British Columbia has shaped his priorities for the region. If elected, he wants to focus on improving emergency preparedness across the Regional District.

He points to lessons learned from major wildfire seasons and believes communities need to be better prepared to operate independently during emergencies.

“We’re on our own for 48 to 72 hours,” Schinkel said, referring to warnings emergency officials have issued following previous wildfire disasters.

Schinkel said fire departments throughout the region are staffed by capable firefighters, but believes more planning is needed to ensure communities have the fuel, supplies and logistical support necessary to function during prolonged emergencies and natural disasters.

Beyond emergency preparedness, Schinkel says he would bring more than three decades of leadership experience to the role. His family has deep roots in the Pineview area, dating back to 1951, and he has lived in the community for more than 50 years.

He also lists fiscal responsibility and expanded recycling opportunities among his priorities.

Looking ahead, Schinkel says climate change is increasing the risk of future natural disasters and argues the region must be ready.

“We’re long overdue for a huge event,” he said.

Election Day is October 17.
