Riding renamed Cariboo—Prince George—Omineca

PRINCE GEORGE — The federal electoral district represented by Conservative MP Todd Doherty has officially received a new name.

Effective immediately, the riding formerly known as Cariboo—Prince George will now be called Cariboo—Prince George—Omineca. The change follows consultations with residents throughout the constituency and comes after Bill C-25 received Royal Assent.

Doherty says the name change was driven in part by feedback from residents in the Vanderhoof area who felt the previous riding name did not fully represent the communities they call home. The addition of “Omineca” is intended to better reflect the region’s geography, history and identity.

“Our riding is one of the largest in Canada and covers a vast and diverse area, and it’s important that its name reflects the people and communities it represents,” Doherty said in a news release announcing the change.

He noted that some residents living in and around Vanderhoof expressed concerns that neither “Cariboo” nor “Prince George” accurately reflected their connection to the riding.

“By adding ‘Omineca,’ we are recognizing the unique identity and heritage of that part of our constituency,” he said.

The riding stretches across a large portion of north-central British Columbia and includes a wide range of communities with distinct regional identities. Supporters of the change say the new name provides greater recognition for residents living in the Omineca region while maintaining references to the Cariboo and Prince George areas.

With the change now finalized, Cariboo—Prince George—Omineca will be the riding name used in all official federal government communications, parliamentary records and future federal elections.

The updated name takes effect immediately.
