Area F candidate focuses on rural advocacy and community growth

Among the biggest challenges facing the region, Olson points to property crime, maintaining population growth and preserving services for residents spread across one of the largest electoral areas in the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.

She also highlighted concerns about road maintenance, particularly during winter, when school buses and industrial traffic share rural roads.

One issue that remains especially personal for Olson is the closure of Giscome Elementary School. Both of her children attended the school, and she played an active role in parent advisory groups and fundraising efforts over the years.

Olson said the closure has left a significant community asset sitting vacant, though residents continue exploring possible future uses for the building, including educational and community-based opportunities.

While she acknowledges reopening the school as a school may be difficult, Olson hopes the facility can eventually serve a meaningful purpose.

As voters weigh their options in the Area F race, Olson said she wants residents to know she understands the unique challenges facing rural communities.

“I am an advocate for rural living,” she said. “I want people to know somebody is there to stand up for them and keep things rolling.”

Olson added that supporting local organizations, preserving regional history and promoting the area’s outdoor attractions would also be priorities if elected.
