PRINCE GEORGE – The updated treaty between Lheidli T’enneh and the provincial and federal government has been signed. This means a vote will take place in June to decide whether to approve the updated 2006 Final Agreement, which has now been renamed the ‘Lheidli T’enneh Treaty’.

Back in 2007, members of the Lheidli T’enneh voted on a Final Agreement and Constitution, at that time the Constitution was accepted, but not the Final Agreement. The updated treaty includes the ratification of 4,330 hectares of land, including the current reserve which presently is owned by the federal government. The Lheidli T’enneh Treaty also provides for a capital transfer of $37.1 million, which represents an additional $20.8 million to Lheidli T’enneh compared to the 2006 agreement.

If the Lheidli T’enneh Treaty is not voted through, the Lheidli T’enneh Band would remain under the Indian Act.

Advance polls will be open at the Prince George Native Friendship Centre June 16 and 17.
