Crime Stoppers Trying To Shred Identity Theft

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Crime Stoppers Society put on another “Shred It” event in the CN Centre parking lot on Saturday. For a small donation, it gives the general public a chance to shred personal or important documents, helping to ensure they will not be a victim of identity theft.

The event is held twice a year on the third weekend of April and September. The job of a Crime Stoppers Society member is to help promote crime reduction and to help keep safety as a forefront. Christine Nicholls, the secretary at Prince George Crime Stoppers say the reason “Shred It” started is because it’s an event anyone can take part in and it gives residents the chance to responsibly, safely and quickly shred personal or important documents.

“Identity Theft is a big issue that happens in many different ways and your documents with private information like banking information, just account information and stuff like that is a great way for thieves to get information. So they end up tailor making emails, text messages to you that you think are coming from a reliable source and then they can steal your information online, they can end up stealing your information through your banking system and it’s a big problem when that happened because you end up reporting what’s happened. But trying to get it undone takes way longer than the damage that is done.”

All proceeds from shredding and the Barbeque put on by Mr Mikes will go towards supporting the Prince George Crime Stopper Society.
