An assistant professor at UNBC has had her credentials called into question after allegedly receiving a Bachelors Degree in Science from Almeda University, an unaccredited institution. UNBC Vice President Dan Ryan says when they hired Doctor Tina Fraser they didn’t look at the alleged degree, rather her terminal degree, which is a PhD from UBC. When students found out they were shocked by the news. “I’ve gotten a number of messages from students who are very concerned about the integrity of both the professor and the university.” said Aaron Larsen, Undergraduate Senator at UNBC. Vice President for UNBC, Dan Ryan suggests they don’t talk about individual cases “In general the key degree is the terminal degree.” said Ryan. “We also look at their research record, teaching records, service record and we also look at letters of reference as well.” In an emailed statement from the university they say that “Dr. Fraser lists a BSc from Almeda, MEd from Simon Fraser University and a PhD from UBC as her credentials.” Fraser claims she never used the degree to fast track the education process. “I never used it to get into university.” said Fraser in a phone interview. Fraser suggests she also received the degree after already completing her Masters from SFU. If Fraser will face any disciplines for having the alleged degree, the University remains tight lipped.
