WILLIAMS LAKE – As of noon on Monday, April 23rd, Category 3 open fires will be banned throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre. The ban is a result of fires that burn undetected for a long time underground during this time of year.

Category 3 open fires include fires larger than two metres high by three metres wide, three or more combined burning piles no bigger than two metres high by three metres wide, one or more burning windrows and stubble or grass burning over an area bigger than 0.2 hectares. Category 3 fires will be prohibited until September 29th.

This ban does not apply to any fires under two metres, cooking stoves or campfires that are a half-metre high.

Anyone found with an open fire higher than two metres may be issued a $1,150 ticket and pay a $10,000 penalty. If someone is convicted in court, they will be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.

The Cariboo Fire Centre goes from Cottonwood River near Quesnel in the north to Loon Lake near Clinton in the south and from Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in the west to Wells Gray Provincial Park in the east. See the full map of the affected areas.
