Hambletonian Society shifting US$1-million Hambletonian to Indiana, not Woodbine

TORONTO — The Hambletonian will be on the move next year, but it won’t be to Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The Hambletonian Society voted to move the US$1-million Grade 1 race to Harrah’s Hoosier Park in Anderson, Ind., starting in 2027. The Hambletonian Stakes has run for over 100 years in the United States and has called The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, N.J., home since 1981.
But the venue was only under contract to stage the 2026 race. The Hambletonian Society, which owns and manages the Hambletonian, Hambletonian Oaks and Breeders Crown series, had opened the bidding for the Hambletonian Stakes beyond this year.
Both Woodbine and Harrah’s Hoosier Park bid to host the prestigious event.
