Gateway concerns

Crime gags Gateway business owners

PRINCE GEORGE — Crime in the Gateway is not a new issue of concern in Prince George.

What’s new this time however is that representatives of the Gateway Business Improvement Association have refused to go on camera to discuss the issue.

Evidence of crime can be seen everywhere in the Gateway – the area between downtown and the VLA. It includes vandalism, public defecation and open drug use.

The RCMP call the area one of a few “hot spots” in the City. And considering the time of year it is – they say it’s not a big surprise considering crime usually increases during the summer months.

The RCMP are focusing more police resources in the area but a big issue is the number of prolific offenders living in the area – which often determines the level of crime in the neighbourhood depending on how many of them are in jail at any given time.

Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall says the City is well aware of the issues in the neighbourhood noting they’re no different than issues seen in city’s around the province.

He says City Council has engaged businesses in the area searching for solutions.

In the meantime, the RCMP has some tips for Gateway business owners including contacting them when problems arise, and installing video surveillance equipment.
