Two years later, no answers to what caused the Elephant Hill fire

ASHCROFT, B.C. — It’s been more than two years since the Elephant Hill wildfire devastated communities across the Cariboo — and there’s no telling when there will be answers as to what happened.

CFJC Today has filed several Freedom of Information (FOI) requests over the past year to obtain the cause and origin report for the fire.

In an email response to our latest request, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development says at this point the documents are withheld in their entirety due to the disclosure of the documents being harmful to law enforcement.

The records are still under investigation by the RCMP, the response says.

“The fire centre has been in contact with the RCMP and was informed that no charge approval decision has been made yet by Crown Counsel,” the ministry says. “There has been no indication when this might occur.”
