Cougars still in search of their first win of the season

Sep 28, 2019 | 8:07 AM

The island woes continued for the Prince George Cougars Friday night

They dropped a 2-1 decision on the island to the Victoria Royals Friday night to drop to 0-3 on the year.

The Cougars went winless last year on the island against the Royals earning just 1 out of a possible 10 points.

Matej Toman opened the scoring in the middle frame for the Cougars which gave them their first lead of the season. The goal was also Toman’s first of the campaign.

Carson Miller would even the game for the Royals in the final six minutes of the 2nd period with his first of the season.

Victoria would net the game-winner 4:56 into the 3rd period as Keanu Derungs beat Taylor Gauthier for his first of the season and helped vault the Royals to their first win of the season.

Taylor Gauthier was superb in between the pipes for the Cougars in the loss Friday, stopping 33 of 35 shots.

The two B.C division rivals will meet again Saturday night in Victoria. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
