Mental Health Day spreads awareness surrounding the illness

October 10th marks Mental Health Day across the globe and is a day to spread awareness regarding mental illness and continue the fight to end the stigma surrounding it.

Mental health is something which everyone deals with and The Canadian Mental Health Association is hoping World Mental Health Day can help people understand the importance of mental wellness.

“Within our Prince George office, we have a ton of programs which we are working on,” stated Executive Director of the Prince George branch for the Canadian Mental Health Association Moreen Davis.

“That can be direct services for people like life skills or bounce back programs. As well as our public education. This includes training employers or training anyone who is interested in how to recognize mental illness when you see it, how to intervene with mental illness, and how to set an environment that will support people with mental illness.”

One of the biggest signs of someone who is suffering from mental illness is a drastic change in the way they act. For an extrovert acting more like an introvert or vice versa.

Over the past couple of years, days like Mental Health Day and Bell Lets Talk has helped in the fight to end the stigma surrounding mental health.

“This is probably the best I have ever seen when it gets to people being willing to discuss their mental health,” shared Davis.

The biggest message which the Canadian Mental Health Association provides each and every day is you are not alone, and talking to someone is the first step in improving your mental health.

Other tips on improving one’s mental health include eating better, sleeping, and taking part in activities which you use to love.
