PRINCE GEORGE – This week, the province awarded 12 million dollars to the BC SPCA. Three million went to the North Cariboo SPCA here in Prince George. This infusion of dollars is excellent news for the local shelter. This new money must be supplemented with a major fundraising campaign locally to become a reality.

The SPCA animal shelter last underwent a major renovation close to thirty years ago. Different layers of colours are visible, showing the effort staff and volunteers have made to maintain the 5000-foot square shelter.

There is no hard date for constructing the new facility as they need to raise more money to meet the region’s needs.

“We want to make sure that we’re meeting the needs of Prince George and the surrounding communities. So lots of table work and lots of figuring out what this community needs.”

“ to fill the gap between the government’s grant and what we’re hoping to have for a new facility, there will be lots of fundraising and lobbying. “

Kristen Sumner

Manager, BC SPCA North Cariboo Animal Centre

The SPCA continues to partner with the city animal control and holds a five-year contract with the city.

There are a lot of unknowns right now. Sumner says they need to raise 5.5 million dollars to build a new facility. What it will look like or the location still needs to be worked on.

The province also funded new SPCA facilities in Vancouver, Duncan and Fort St John.
