Winter tire regulations take effect October 1

Sep 29, 2023 | 10:38 AM

PRINCE GEORGE—On Sunday winter tires will be required for most routes across B.C. This includes within Prince George city limits such as, Victoria street, 20th Avenue and the Highways. The routes will be marked with regulatory signs posted on highways throughout the year. Freight vehicles over 11,974 must carry tire chains.

When it comes to winter tire the M+S all season tires are viable. However, most auto service providers would recommend that for Northern BC, tires bearing the three peak mountain snowflake symbol are a safer option.

where we live, I definitely recommend a three-peak mountain snowflake or at least an all-weather. There is a bit of a difference between all-season and all-weather where an all-season just has the M+S and an all-weather has that three-peak mountain snowflake that you can run 12 months out of the year.

Tristen Popowich, OK Tire Service Advisor,

The RCMP are pushing the message that enforcement is not about fines, rather public safety. The RCMP may turn all vehicles away if they believe road conditions are unsafe. DriveBC is an excellent source of information for highway conditions and weather forecasts.

Winter tires will be mandatory until April 30 for most highways in BC. Although, for some highway not located through mountain passes or high snowfall areas, the restrictions end March 31. The fine for a passenger vehicle caught without winter tires is $121.
