QUESNEL — The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) has concluded its investigation into an incident in Quesnel that resulted in a man being hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

The incident occurred on April 15, 2026, after police received reports of gunshots at a residence in the 500 block of Nason Street. According to the IIO, the call, which came in at approximately 4:30 p.m., also indicated a man at the property was in possession of a firearm.

RCMP officers, including members of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), responded to the scene and established containment around the area. Residents nearby were instructed to either evacuate their homes or shelter in their basements as police managed the situation.

Police later entered the residence and found a man suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to hospital by ambulance for medical assessment and treatment.

The IIO, the province’s civilian oversight agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in serious harm or death, was notified shortly after the incident and launched an investigation.

In a report released Tuesday, the IIO said investigators reviewed a range of evidence, including police body-worn camera footage, audio recordings, medical records, witness statements and forensic evidence.

Following that review, the chief civilian director determined there was no connection between the man’s injuries and any action or inaction by police officers.

As a result, the IIO has concluded its investigation, finding the injuries were not related to police conduct.
